Can I tell you what happened in my kitchen this morning? I was standing at the sink, running the same tired thought through my head on repeat — you know the one, the “I’m behind, I’m not doing enough, I’m not enough” loop we all know so well. And out of nowhere I heard myself think, so what would it look like to just… think a smaller, truer thought instead? Not a whole new outlook. Not a total transformation by 9am. Just one small shift.
That’s when it hit me — I don’t need a mountain of faith or a total mindset overhaul to move forward. I just need a mustard seed’s worth. Jesus said it Himself in Matthew 17:20: faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. And I think that’s true for our thoughts too. We don’t need to fix our whole mindset today. We just need one small, true seed planted where the lie used to live.
Renewing the Mind, One Small Seed at a Time
Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Renewing isn’t a one-time event — it’s a daily, sometimes hourly, choice. Every time I catch a negative thought and swap it for a true one, I’m renewing my mind. Every time I choose to believe what God says about me over what my anxiety says about me, I’m planting that mustard seed. And little by little, those small shifts grow into something that actually holds up a mountain.
I’ll be honest, some days my “mustard seed” is really small. It might just be whispering “He is with me” instead of spiraling. That’s okay. God isn’t asking for a mountain of faith today. He’s just asking for the seed.
Lately I’ve been keeping a little physical reminder close by — I actually just added a Mustard Seed Faith Pendant Necklace to my shop, with a real mustard seed sealed right into the pendant. I love having something I can hold onto (literally) on the hard days, a tiny reminder that it doesn’t take much faith to start moving mountains — it just takes a seed and a willingness to plant it.
A Verse to Hold Onto
“He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’” — Matthew 17:20
Journal Prompt
Grab your journal (or the notes app, no judgment here) and sit with this for a minute: What’s one tired, repeating thought I could trade for a smaller, truer one today? Write down the old thought, and right next to it, write the mustard-seed-sized truth you want to plant instead.
A Small Practice for Today
Every time you catch that old thought creeping in today, pause and say your new one out loud — even just under your breath. Don’t wait to feel like a whole new person. Just plant the seed and let God handle the growing. That’s His job, not ours.
Friend, wherever you’re standing today — kitchen sink, car line, office chair — you don’t need a mountain of faith to take the next step. You just need a seed. Plant it. I’m rooting for you.
With so much love,
Jena
