Have you ever looked at where someone else is in life — their marriage, their finances, their spiritual walk — and quietly felt like you were failing at your own? I think most of us have been there. Scrolling, comparing, wondering why our story looks so different from theirs.
Comparison steals more than it gives
Comparison promises clarity but delivers discouragement instead. It tells you what you’re missing without ever telling you the full story of what someone else walked through to get there — the hard seasons, the doubts, the waiting they don’t post about. You end up grieving a life you never actually lived, based on a chapter you never actually saw in full.
God writes each story differently, on purpose
Scripture is full of people whose paths looked nothing alike — some waited decades for a promise, some received it almost instantly, some walked through seasons of deep hardship before any breakthrough came at all. God was never running the same story twice. Your timeline was never meant to match anyone else’s, because your calling isn’t a copy of theirs. This is part of what I explore in Still, Small Voice — learning to trust your own relationship with God instead of measuring it against someone else’s.
A practice for breaking the comparison habit
Next time you catch yourself comparing, try naming it out loud: That’s comparison, not truth. Then bring it honestly to God instead of carrying it alone — ask Him to help you see your own life clearly again, not through someone else’s lens. Small, consistent moments like this, day after day, are exactly the rhythm I built into Grace Unfolding — steady faithfulness in your own story, not a race against anyone else’s.
So today, friend — your chapter is still being written, and it was never meant to look like anyone else’s. That’s not a setback. That’s the point.
I’d love to hear — what helps you stay focused on your own path instead of comparing? Come find me on Instagram, I’d love to know.
With grace,
