Have you ever compared your prayer life to someone else’s Instagram caption? Their beautifully lit Bible, their perfectly highlighted verses, their “God told me” story — and quietly wondered what’s wrong with you for not having that?
I have. More times than I’d like to admit.
The comparison trap nobody warns you about
Here’s something I wish someone had told me years ago: the loudest faith isn’t always the deepest faith. Some of the most spiritually mature people I know are quiet about it. They’re not posting their prayer journals. They’re just… showing up, day after ordinary day, in ways nobody sees.
Meanwhile, we scroll and measure ourselves against a highlight reel, forgetting that everyone’s behind-the-scenes looks a lot messier than their front-facing one. It’s actually part of why I wrote Still, Small Voice — because so many of us are waiting to feel spiritually “enough” before we believe we can hear from God at all.
What “behind” actually means
I don’t think God is keeping a scoreboard of who prays longest or reads the most chapters. I think He’s far more interested in whether you’re actually present with Him — even for five distracted minutes — than whether you look like you have it together.
If you skipped your devotional this week. If your prayers have felt more like tired sighs than eloquent words. If you’ve wondered whether God’s still listening. That’s not falling behind. That’s just being human in a relationship that was never supposed to be performative in the first place.
A small shift that changes everything
Instead of asking “Am I doing enough?” try asking “Am I present?” Even two honest minutes with God beats twenty performed ones. He’s not grading effort. He’s building relationship.
That’s actually the whole heart behind Grace Unfolding too — it’s not built for perfect streaks. It’s built for real, sustainable presence, one day at a time, all year long.
