Friend, can I tell you something I had to learn the hard way?

You cannot carry the problem and the promise at the same time.

I know that sounds simple. Maybe even too simple. But sit with it for a second, because I don’t think it is simple — I think it’s actually one of the hardest things about walking with God.

Here’s what I mean. When something hard hits — the diagnosis, the bill you can’t pay, the relationship that’s falling apart, the kid who won’t call you back — our hands go straight to the problem. We pick it up. We turn it over and over, examining every angle, every “what if,” every worst-case scenario. And here’s the thing about hands: they can only hold so much. When your hands are full of the problem, there’s no room left to receive the promise.

God is not stingy with His promises. Scripture is full of them — He will never leave you nor forsake you. He works all things together for good. He gives peace that doesn’t make sense. But a promise, even a true one, even a God-given one, can’t land in hands that are already clenched around something else.

I think that’s why Philippians 4:6-7 doesn’t say “worry less.” It says don’t be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, present your requests to God. That word “present” — that’s a hand-off. You can’t present something you’re still gripping.

So here’s my question for you today, and I’m asking myself right along with you: what problem are you holding onto so tight that you haven’t left room for the promise?

Maybe you don’t even realize you’re still holding it. Maybe it’s become so familiar in your hands that it feels like it belongs there. But friend, it doesn’t. It was never meant to stay.

Try this with me: name the problem out loud, right where you are. Then name the promise that answers it. Not a vague “it’ll be fine” — an actual word from Him. And then, physically if you have to, open your hands. Let one go so the other has somewhere to rest.

You weren’t made to carry both. You were made to release one and receive the other.

With so much love,
Momma J 🤍
