Can I tell you something a little embarrassing? Some mornings I still reach for my phone before I even open my eyes — scrolling, checking, comparing — and by the time my feet hit the floor I’m already behind on gratitude for the day I haven’t even lived yet. Anybody else?
I’ve been sitting with this lately: gratitude isn’t a feeling that shows up on its own when life is easy. It’s a practice. A muscle. Something I have to choose on purpose, especially on the days that don’t feel like much — the laundry days, the waiting-on-God days, the days that look exactly like yesterday. Those are actually the days gratitude matters most, because that’s where our faith either grows roots or stays shallow.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 doesn’t say “give thanks when things go your way.” It says:
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
In all circumstances — not just the good ones. That word wrecked me a little when I really sat with it, because it means gratitude isn’t dependent on my circumstances lining up. It’s a decision I get to make regardless of what’s on my plate that day, and honestly, it changes how the day feels almost immediately.
Here’s a small thing I started doing that’s helped me more than I expected: I keep fresh (or dried) flowers in a little vintage bud vase on my kitchen table. Every time I walk by it, it’s a visual nudge — a two-second pause to notice something good before I move on to the next thing. It doesn’t have to be flowers for you. Maybe it’s a candle, a sticky note on the mirror, a verse taped to the coffee maker. Just something that catches your eye and says “pause, and notice.”
Journal Prompt
Grab your journal (or the notes app, no judgment) and finish this sentence five times: “Today, I noticed grace in…” Don’t overthink it. It can be as small as a good cup of coffee or a text from a friend. The goal isn’t a poetic list — it’s training your eyes to look for God’s fingerprints on an ordinary Tuesday.
A little affirmation for today: I don’t need perfect circumstances to have a grateful heart. Right where I am, there is enough grace to notice.
If you want a little something for your own home that reminds you to pause and give thanks, that bud vase I mentioned is part of my Cozy Cottage Collection — simple, handmade pieces made to hold a little beauty and a little grace in the everyday.
Sending you so much love today, friend. Go notice something good. 💛
