Can I tell you something that took me way too long to learn? Feeling behind and actually being behind are two completely different things. One is a fact. The other is just a feeling that showed up after you scrolled somebody else’s highlight reel for twenty minutes.
You know the spiral. She got married. He got the promotion. They bought the house. And meanwhile you’re sitting there with your unfinished plans and your unanswered prayers, wondering if God skipped your name on the list. I want to gently push back on that thought today, because I don’t think He did. I think you’re just on a different clock than you think you are.
Ecclesiastes says there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Not a season for everyone at the same time — a season for every activity, appointed and specific. Your harvest was never supposed to look like her harvest. You’re not growing the same crop.
I think about Sarah a lot. Waited decades for the promise God gave her. Watched other women raise babies while she stood there empty-handed, probably wondering the same thing you’re wondering right now. And then Isaac came — not on her timeline, but exactly on God’s (Genesis 21:1-2). The wait didn’t mean she was forgotten. It meant the promise was still cooking.
Here’s what I’ve had to remind myself more times than I can count: comparison doesn’t just steal your joy, it steals your attention. Every minute you spend measuring your middle against somebody else’s finish line is a minute you’re not spending building what’s actually yours. And baby, what’s actually yours is still under construction. It’s not behind schedule. It’s just not finished.
So today, instead of asking “why isn’t it my turn yet,” try asking “what is this season actually building in me?” Because there’s always something. Patience. Character. A testimony you can’t get any other way. Romans puts it plainly: suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope (Romans 5:3-4). That’s not wasted time. That’s construction time.
You are not behind. You are becoming. Those are two very different words, and only one of them is true about you right now.
